James Ruffus Sockwell was born on August 22, 1875 in Colbert county, Alabama to Edwin William Sockwell and Sarah C. Phillips. He married Mary Frances Thompson on May 5, 1895 in Franklin county, Alabama. They were married by Isaac Bradford.

James and Mary had seven children. In 1920 they were living in Moulton AL, but by 1923, they had moved to Muscle Shoals, AL on property that is now located along the Wilson Dam Road and near Okolona Baptist Church where they are listed as some of it's early members. Both James' and Mary's signatures are found on the document for Muscle Shoals to become incorporated.
