John B Bates, 68, retired Pennsylvania railroad conductor, passed away Friday morning at 5:45 o'clock at his home, 343 Steubenville avenue, following an illness lasting five years. His condition had been serious for the past six months. Mr Bates was employed with the railroad for a period of 40 years. His health failed while employed as conductor and he was given a job as crossing watchman. After serving in this capacity for some time he was retired. He was born Sept 14, 1867, and had been a resident of Cambridge for 35 years, moving here from Marietta. His wife died six years ago. The decedent was a member of the Sarahsville M.E. church and was affiliated with the O.R.C., railroad conductors' association. Surviving are seven brothers, L.P. Bates of Akron, A.H. Bates of New Concord R.D., L.M. Bates of Byesville, A.T. Bates of Marion, Ind., E. F., Dennis and Homer E. Bates of Cambridge. One sister, Mrs Viola Rose Jirles, is deceased. The body was removed to the McMillen and Scott funeral home, South Tenth street, and will be taken late Friday to the home of his brother E. F. Bates, 503 South Eleventh street. Funeral services will be held at the Sarahsville M.E. church Sunday morning at 10:30 o'clock. Interment will be made in Sarahsville cemetery. Friday 23 August 1935 Cambridge Jeffersonian
