Dr. Fred V. Cahill Jr., 68, Dies; College Professor and Dean
Dr. Fred V. Cahill Jr., professor emeritus of political science at North Carolina State University, died May 23 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, N. C., after a long illness. He was 68 years old and lived in Raleigh.
Dr. Cahill joined North Carolina State in 1960 as dean of what was then the undergraduate School of General Studies and later became the first dean of the university's School of Liberal Arts. The division is now the School of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Dr. Cahill stepped down as dean in 1971 and became a professor of political science. He retired in 1980.
Dr. Cahill, a native of Dayton, Wash., graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1937 and received a master's degree in political science there in 1938. He earned a doctoral degree at Yale University in 1941.
Before joining North Carolina State, Dr. Cahill taught at the University of Oregon and Yale and was dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Massachusetts from 1955 to 1960.
He is survived by his wife, Nan Hardin Cahill, and a brother, Hugh E. Cahill of San Jose, Calif.
