Son of James Neeley and Ellen McWhorter.

Walton was a retired teacher and mayor.

The Wellington Leader March 27, 1947

W. W. Neeley, former Wellington mayor and an early day school teacher in the county, died at his home at 9:35, p. m., Wednesday, March 19. He had been in ill health since suffering a heart attack about two years ago. Recently he became ill with flu, and after complications set in, his condition became critical. Mr. Neeley was 71 years of age and had lived in Collingsworth County for approximately 50 years. For many years he engaged in stock farming, but retired and moved to Wellington 22 years ago. He served Wellington as its mayor from 1931 to 1933. He had in addition rendered many services to the town and county of a purely voluntary nature in his efforts toward helping develop this area. A native Texan, Walton Wesley Neeley was born at Tola, Grimes County, July 27, 1875, and at the time of his death he was 71 years, 7 months and 22 days of age. He was a member of a pioneer Texas family, both his parents having been born in this state. His boyhood was spent in Grimes, at Whitt in Parker County and at Jacksboro. He received his education in the schools at these places. When he was 22 years old, Mr. Neeley came to Collingsworth county and taught his first school at Buck Creek. He remained there three terms. He later taught at Fresno for two terms and at other county schools. Altogether, he taught in this county for 10 years. In the meantime, he bought some land, so he quit the teaching profession and began stock farming.
He remained in this business until he moved to Wellington in 1925.
For some time after coming here, he was associated with one of the local lumber companies. He was elected mayor in 1931 and served ably and conscientiously. Mr. Neeley was a member of the Methodist Church, having joined at Whitt when he was 16 years of age. He was a charter member of the Knights of Pythias, organized here more than 45 years ago, and was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was first married to Miss Lula Owens at Quail. She preceded him in death a number of years ago. On November 1, 1938, he was married to Mrs. Flossie Cummings Hampton at Oklahoma City. Widely known throughout this area, Mr. Neeley had the respect of all who knew him. He was a quiet and retiring nature, but he was a devoted worker to all causes he supported, and a man to whom others looked for leadership.

Mr. Neeley is survived by his widow and five brothers and sisters, Mrs. D. C. Worsham of Altus, Okla., Mrs. J. S. Alexander and D. A. Neeley of Memphis, Mrs. Al Pace of Carlsbad, N. M., and J. E. Neeley of Lamesa.
