John Arch was born in Laurens District, South Carolina. His parents were William Dollar and Virlinda Prather. He moved with his family to Newton County, Georgia by 1830. He grew to manhood working on the farm. He was married to Sarah Maud Henderson in Newton County in 1848. He and his wife started a family. He later moved to Heard County, Georgia.

War came to the south and to Georgia in 1861. John enlisted on February 11th 1863 as a private in the 10th Regiment Georgia Confederate Cavalry. He joined his regiment in middle Tennessee after the Battle of Stone's RIver and before the Battle of Knoxville. He became ill with a fever. He was sent to Kingston, Tennessee to hospital sick with fever in March and he died on the 7th of June 1863.

His wife filed for a pension as a widow later in time. On an application witnesses included F. A. Hill, J. J. Moore, and G. B. Hendon. The pension document mentions that these men were in the same cavalry unit as John Arch. John Arch and Maud had 6 children.
