George Boyle was born 5 September 1804 in Duppal, Kirkoswald, Ayre, Scotland. He was the son of Neil and Mary Boyle. When he was about 12 years old, his father apprenticed him out to learn the shoemaking trade. He continued that occupation for the rest of his life, making shoes for President Brigham Young and his family when in Salt Lake.

On 8 March 1829, George married Mary McDougall, daughter of Andrew and Jane Yearle McDougal. They had seven children: Jean, Mary, Janet, Margaret, Elizabeth, George, and Andrew.

In 1839, missionaries arrived in Glasgo, Scotland and began to teach the gospel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. George and Mary were among those who accepted the gospel. George was baptized 21 April 1844, and Mary on 20 October 1845. The missionaries encouraged them to immigrate to the United States, but it wasn't until 1864 that they had raised enough money for the move.

George and Mary immigrated to the United States with three of their children: Margaret, Elizabeth and Andrew. The three oldest daughters stayed in England, and George died before the move. On May 21, 1864, they boarded the General McClellan from Liverpool, England to New York. They then travelled to Nebraska, joined the Joseph S. Rawlins Company and began the trek to Salt Lake City. They arrived in Salt Lake City on 20 September 1864.

Although many were called to settle out-lying areas, George and his family was asked to remain in Salt Lake City, where he opened a shoemaker's business. However, George did not live long after establishing his home. He passed away 2 October 1871.
