When he was 16 years old he crossed the Atlantic Ocean and immigrated to the United States. He arrived in Utah in September of 1864.
He married Margaret Young on April 22, 1875. Together they had 11 children. He was a stonemason by trade and took an active part in the construction of the Salt Lake Temple. In his early years in Utah, he was employed with the Union Pacific Railroad.
