The Pelham Journal, January 30, 1920, Charles Howze, Former Mitchell County Man Killed At Macon
Macon, Ga., January 20.-When R. E. Herrington, a foreman in the Central of Georgia Railroad shops, entered his home at No. 414 Jackson street at 7:50 o'clock last night and found his wife and a young boarder, Charles Howze, who is said to be the woman's uncle, engaged in washing and drying the dishes, he opened fire and killed both. . . .
There were no eye witnesses to the tragedy, save the three little children of the Herringtons-Oliver, Louise and Nettie May, the oldest being about 5 years of age.
Mrs. Herrington's brother, J. R. Shinholser, was in the house at the the time of the shooting, but he said last night he was asleep and did not know of the tragedy until Herrington awoke him and told him what he had done. Shinholser was grief stricken and could not remember the names of the members of the family when he was discussing the family affairs last night. He finally said that Mrs. Herrington's father is A. C. Shinholser, of Hosford, Fla., and he said that there is a sister, Miss Lily Shinholser, residing at Valdosta. An uncle, he said, W J. Shinholser, resides in Macon.
According to information obtained from the brother of the dead woman, the couple were married in Macon eight years ago. . . .
Mrs. Herrington's age was given yesterday as 23 years, instead of 32. Members of the family stated that she was married when only 13 years of age. . . .
