In 1920, he was a coal miner in Bastrop County, Texas, where he immigrated from Mexico in 1919. The coal mining company recruited workers in Mexico due to a coal mining boom back then. His brother, Macedonio, was also a coal miner there, and they lived next door to each other. There were also many others of their neighbors in the company town of Denham, Bastrop County, Texas (now an extinct place) who were coal miners recruited in Mexico.
