Johann was born in Oberseebach, Alsace on August 11, 1834. At the age of 17, his dad helped him to leave the country to avoid being drafted into the military. After dark one evening, Johann and his dad went down to the Rhine River, where he was instructed to swim across and whistle when he made it to the other side, so his dad would know that he made it at least that far. He was told to find a large family to live with. From there, he came across the Atlantic Ocean on a sail ship which took 60 days. Johann never became a U.S. citizen for fear of being caught. He married a part Indian girl with the last name of Walter who died in childbirth on March 24, 1866, while delivering their only child, a girl named Barbara. When Barbara was 8 years old, Johann married Frances Trubenbach.
The Rohmers moved to St. Joseph, Missouri. the family grew by nine children. Barbara married John Herr and after their third child was born, moved to Texas. Two years later Johann and Frances followed. Their children ranged in age from 20 to only several months old. In less than a year the family had built a home and farmed 185 acres. Their youngest daughter died of scarlet fever and the oldest died of a female related disease.
After his children were all grown and married or moved away from home, except for Odelia, Johann and Frances moved into Muenster, building a new home.
Johann died at his desk while writing to his doctor for his medication for dropsy.
