From the Moweaqua Call-Mail, 14 October 1896.

William Portwood, the subject of this sketch, died at Allenboro, Illinois, on 5 October 1896 at 8 o'clock PM. Deceased was a native of Kentucky, being born in Jessamine County, Kentucky, on the 14th of May 1827. His father's name was Simpson Portwood and his mother's maiden name was Lamb, she being an aunt of John and William Lamb, long since dead, and former citizens of Long Grove.

At an early age he moved with his parents to Sullivan County, Indiana, and from thence to Macon County, Illinois, settling near Long Grove cemetery where he is buried. He married in 1848 to Sarah Luke in Crawford County, Illinois, and moved to Macon County in 1849. By his first marriage, six children were born, two of whom died in infancy near the time of their mother's death, which occurred in March 1855. One daughter, Eliza Jane Portwood, died in 1869.

Three children are still living. They are Nancy, wife of D.T. Atteberry of Davis City, Iowa; Simpson Portwood of Rosalia, Washington, and Mary, wife of Reden Scribner of Decatur.

On 29 June 1855, he was married to Elizabeth Atteberry. By this union three children were born, one of which died at eleven years of age. Two are still living: John H Portwood of Angus, Nebraska, who arrived but a few hours before his father's death, and J.M. Portwood of Allenboro, Illinois. His second wife died in October 1891.

On 4 March 1894, he was married to Mrs. Margaret Price, who survives him. They were living with his youngest son, J.M. Portwood at Allenboro at the time of his demise. He was satisfied and longed to die, in the hope of gaining a better home in Heaven. He was a member of the Christian Church, being baptized by Elder Morgan in 1894.
