Jim claimed to be born in Natchez, Mississippi. He told his children he only attended 2 years of schooling and that he came west while very young with a man by the name of Reece Nash. It is not known who his parents were or what happened to them, why he came west at such a young age or if Hathorn/Hathhorn was his actual surname. He cannot be found on any US Federal Census records until 1910. He is not listed in any orphanage in Mississippi or Louisana.

In 1903 he worked as a ranch hand for a farmer/rancher Jesse Bell in Umatilla county who financed his homestead near Madras, Crook county, Oregon (now in Jefferson county). He married Emily May "Emma" Barton 18 Oct 1903 in the "parlours of the Athena Hotel." In 1904 and 1906 his signature is on an "Official Register of Electors for Kitcher, Crook County, Oregon" as a land owner. His first two children were born on the homestead.

Jim and May moved to Hood River and built a home on Taylor Street where they lived the remainder of their lives. It was a one story building with a cellar that was used to store wood for the winter and preserved food such as salt pork, slabs of bacon, hams, hanging meats, and vegetables. There was a pantry in the cellar for home canned foods.

Fruit trees were planted and earth was plowed for gardening. A chicken coop housed poultry. A barn was built for horses, cows and pigs.

He was a teamster using his horses to excavate and clear land, plowing and cultivating farm land, hauling wood for heating and cooking and other teaming work needed to raise his growing family.
