Carl Friedrich Wilhelm (William) Schrimper was born to Gerhard Henrich (Henry) Ludewig Schrimper and his wife Henriette Wilhelmine Luise Kollweiher on 24 March 1833 in Levern, Westfalen, Germany. Records indicate that he, along with his father and brother, Christian Friederick (Frederick), arrived in New York City on 30 June 1854. He, his brother, and their father eventually made their way to Linn County, Iowa.

William married Johanna Magretha Halvorsdatter Musland in Linn County on 27 February 1857. Their only child, Christian (Chris), was born in 1858. Johanna died in September 1859. By 1860, Christian was living with his maternal grandparents, the Torrisens, in Benton County, Iowa, and William and his father are farming together in Spring Grove, Linn County.

William married Elizabeth Jane Gillespe on 27 February 1862. No further record has been found regarding Elizabeth, whether she died or left William.

William enlisted with the Union Army’s 20th Regiment, Iowa Infantry, Company F on 2 December 1863.

After the Civil War, William married Bridget O’Herron in 1867. Together they had two children, Catherine and William Henry.

William and Bridget raised Catherine and William Henry in Marion, Iowa. William (the father) lived in Marion until his death on 20 January 1913.

His first son, Chris, apparently never rejoined the family, but continued to live with his maternal grandparents until adulthood.
