Gertie was a loyal daughter, wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a homemaker. She was a master gardener, who had an enormous vegetable garden each year. She also raised strawberries and rhubarb which she used to make delicious pies and strawberry shortcake. She had an apple tree and she picked wild blackberries. She was a master cook and preserved fruit and vegetables from her garden. As well in her young life she keep livestock for meat. She had pigs for pork that she canned and froze. She was famous for her livermush. She canned sausage, and ribs, and pork chops. She put country hams in her smoke house with bacon and side meat. She had a cow from which she had sweet milk, and made buttermilk and butter. She had chickens for eggs and once a year killed the old hens and made chicken and dumplings to eat and can. She was a master seamstress and made most of her dresses. She was a master quilter and made many beautiful quilts which she gave as gifts. She was an Active Member of Carson's Chapel United Methodist Church. She served her Church by cleaning the building each Saturday afternoon. She also provided Sunday lunch to the Preacher and his family. Gertie gave to her friends and neighbors by sharing the harvest from her garden which gave her pleasure. She was a quiet woman who loved to watch old movies on the TV after church on Wednesday nights. And, she loved to watch Bonanza on Sunday nights. Gertie loved to dip snuff. In her declining years Gertie's Mother, Maggie Harris Curtis lived in Gertie's home. Gertie died after a heart attack and many years of declining health. She was a colon cancer survivor. After the death of her husband, Jones E. Poteat she lived with her son David and his wife Grace until her death. Gertie and Jones had 7 children. Bobby J. Poteat and Ila Mae Poteat died as children. 5 children survived to become adults: Paul Poteat; David Poteat; Hazel Poteat Silver; Ernest Poteat; and Lois Poteat Nolens. Gertie'S parents were Morris S. Curtis and Maggie Harris Curtis. They had ten children. She was the fourth child born to them and the third daughter. Her siblings are listed here. It was widely known that know one ever went into Jones and Gertie's house and left hungery and at harvest time each summer they had bags of vegetables. Her's was a live well lived. She was beloved by her grand-children and a great granny.
