Albert Pierrepoint was a British hangman, whose name appeared on the Home Office's official list of hangmen from 1932 to 1956. It is estimated that he executed 433 men and 17 women including 6 US soldiers at Shepton Mallet Prison in England and also some 200 Nazi war criminals after World War II in Germany. He claimed in his autobiography, EXECUTIONER: PIERREPOINT that he never really knew the precise number of executions that he performed. The actual number is believed to be 608 people. Albert came from a family of hangmen both his father, Henry Albert Pierrepoint as was his uncle, Thomas William Pierrepoint were executioners in Brittan. After numerous books and post career fame, Albert Pierrepoint was a opponent of the death penalty. He and his wife Anne retired to Southport. He lived the last four years of his life in a nursing home theredied peacefully in a retirement home in Southport, England. The location of his burial has been kept a secret.
