Teacher Killed When Auto Goes Off Embankment

Miss Dixie Norman, 8400 Sycamore street, a teacher in the Gayarre school, was killed, and Miss Louise Stringer, 8022 Spruce street, vice-principle of the Robert E. Lee school, was injured when their automobile plunged off an embankment on the Old Spanish Trail at Mount Pleasant, Fla., at 1 p.m. Wednesday, according to reports from that town.
In the plunge over the embankment, Miss Norman's neck was broken, causing almost instant death. Miss Stringer, who was too shocked to give a coherent account of incidents preceding and following the crash. Residents at Mount Pleasant held the opinion that locked steering gears caused the automobile to overturn.
According to reports from Chattahoochee, the sheriff of Gadsden county is conducting an investigation to determine how the crash occurred.
Mrs. A.C. Van Horn, Miss Norman's sister, left New Orleans for Chattahoochee immediately after learning of the tragedy.
Relatives said Miss Norman and Miss Stringer, who were close friends and neighbors, left Tuesday on a pleasure tour, which they expected to end before the opening of the city's schools.
Miss Norman was the daughter of the late Richard A. Norman and Mrs. Ella Barnes Norman. She is survived by another sister, Mrs, Dryden Williams.
Superintendent of Schools Nicholas Bauer was shocked Wednesday night when informed of the death of Miss Norman, who he said was one of the leaders in school work and an excellent teacher.
Miss Stringer, he said, has recently been promoted to the faculty of the city high school department to take effect this fall.

Funeral Services for Dixie Norman to Be Held Today
Body of Teacher Killed in Accident is Brought Home
Funeral services for Miss Dixie Norman, a teacher in the Gayarre school, killed Wednesday afternoon in an automobile accident at Mount Pleasant, Fla., will be privately conducted from the residence of her sister, Mrs. A.C. Van Horn, 8400 Sycamore Street, Friday. Mrs. Van Horn brought Miss Norman's body back to New Orleans Thursday night.
