Mary Belle Pound-Altic was born on Wednesday, September 18, 1918, in Fredonia, Kansas. She was the daughter of John William and Myra Zola (McGaugh) Cook. Mary grew up in Fredonia and moved to Ottawa, in Franklin County, Kansas in 1958, where she made her home until her death Monday, February 13, 2006, at the age of eighty-seven years.

Mary graduated from Benedict High School, which is located near Fredonia, with the class of 1936. She worked as a Dietary Aide for eight years at Ransom Memorial Hospital in Ottawa, retiring in May of 1990. She also worked as a waitress for many years at Royal Café and Woolworth's Department Store in Ottawa.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church of Ottawa and former member of the Christian Church in Fredonia.

Mary loved being around people and enjoyed going out for coffee and eating with her friends. She loved to travel and shop for her beautiful doll collection and also collected coins and pigs. Mary's greatest joy, however, came from spending time with her family.

On July 18, 1936, Mary was united in marriage with Harry Kendall Pound in Independence, Kansas. He preceded her in death December 11, 1981. On April 14, 1990, Mary married Robert Dean Altic in Ottawa. He preceded her in death on July 28, 1993. She is also preceded in death by her parents and brother, Hubert Cook.

Mary is survived by three sons, Gary Pound and his wife, Mary, of Hutchinson, KS, Don Pound and his wife, Pat, of Topeka, KS, Larry Pound and his wife, Gabbi, of Vernon, CT; daughter, Karen Stine and her husband, Mike, of Ottawa, KS; three sisters, Juanita Ropp of Fredonia, KS, Betty Hash and her husband, Walt, of Neodesha, KS, Norma Wescott of Buffalo, KS; six brothers, Willis Cook and his wife, Susan, of Wichita, KS, Dale Cook and his wife, Jean, of San Diego, CA, Milburn Cook and his wife, Marge, of Warsaw, MO, Bill Cook of Bonner Springs, KS, Fred Cook and his wife, Marge, of Chanute, KS, Richard Cook and his wife, Verna, of Godley, TX; ten grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren.

SERVICES: Graveside services will be held at Princeton Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, February 17, 2006.

IN STATE: Friends may pay their respects to Mrs. Altic at Dengel & Son Mortuary after 1:00 p.m. Thursday to the service hour, where a Rosary will be said at 6:30 Thursday evening with a family visitation from 7 to 8:00 p.m.
