He married Dorothy Irene (Scholer) Sherman on October 27, 1934 and they resided at Route 4 Box 136, Portland, IN. John Sherman graduated from Portland High School in 1933. He worked for 50 years as a tax preparer and bookkeeper and was the owner and operator of Sherman Hardware. He also held the titles of Jay County Deputy Assessor and County Commissioner. In addition to these positions he was a self-employed farmer and worked for Haynes Mill.
Survivors include his wife of 70 years Dorothy Sherman; son John J. Sherman of Indianapolis; two daughters Mrs. Alden (Rosalind) K. McClure of Indianapolis and Mrs. David (Beth) Marsh of Noblesville; sister Elizabeth Flaler of Raleigh, North Carolina; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter Janice E. Ross.
He was a member of West Walnut Street Church of Christ, Eastern Star 91, F. & A.M. 87, Odd Fellows 281, Scottish Rite and Mizpah Shrine.
