Clarice Schreurs, 60, dies after showing how to live
By Jill Callison, Argus Leader staff.
As the mother of 10, Clarice Schreurs often found herself teaching lessons that ranged from how to tie bows in shoelaces to how to lead a Christian life. Even after she was diagnosed with cancer 15 months ago, she continued to share life's lessons. "She was a cool mom," her oldest child, Susan Olson of Bakersfield, Calif. "For 60 years she taught us to live faithfully, and in the last few months she's taught us how to die gracefully. This has been an absolute learning process for us".
Clarice Schreurs, 60, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 1999, at her home near Larchwood, Iowa. Her family conducted a vigil at her bedside, lighting candles, anointing her with oil and making certain she had her rosaries nearby. "She organized her own going away party". Olson said. "We were praying and reminiscing and all the brothers, and my sister and I were just bonding tighter and tighter. It was amazing seeing what this woman had given to us. It was a good send off, but I don't feel like she's gone, because I can always count on her." Two of Schreurs' children Vaughn and Curtis, preceded her in death. When the daughter of friends dies, she wrote them a poem that shared their grief at the los of a child. Her mother was a good cook who seasoned her food with hospitality, Olson said. Neighborhood children knew they were welcome to share a meal and stay the night, if they wanted. Schreurs and Monica Rutten of Sioux Falls helped start an annual nightly vigil at St. Joseph Cathedral in Sioux Falls. This year's vigil begins tonight and is dedicated to Mrs. Schreurs. Mrs. Schreurs and her oldest child shared a love of sunflowers. At one point, Olson told her mother that when she got to heaven, she needed to plant lots of sunflowers. Shortly after her mother died, a bouquet of sunflowers arrived on the Schreurs' doorstep. It was an anniversary gift to Olson from her husband in California. "Mom died on my 20th anniversary. Who would have thought, 20 years ago . . . ." Olson said, her voice trailing off. Clarice Ann Oliver was born Sept. 29, 1938, in Sioux Falls. She was raised in Canton and graduated from Canton High School in 1956. She then worked at Farmers Elevator in Canton. On May 16, 1959, she married Arlyn Schreurs in Canton. They moved to the Schreurs family farm near Larchwood. She was a full-time mother to 10 children and a homemaker. In 1979 Clarice and her husband founded the annual Labor Day Plum Creek Rodeo, which continues to this day. In 1988 she became director of activities at Prince of Peace care center in Sioux Falls. She was a 40 year member of St. Mary's Altar Society and St. Margaret Circle. Mrs. Schreurs enjoyed quilting, sewing and crafts and played the piano, organ, accordion and guitar. In addition to her daughter, survivors include her husband; seven other children, Joel, Ellery, Tony, John, Jerry, Sara Schemmel and Matt, all of Larchwood; two brothers, Edward Oliver of Canton and Ralph Oliver of Sioux Falls; one sister, Linda Larson of Baltic, and 12 grandchildren. Funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at The Church of St. Mary in Larchwood, Iowa with burial in the Larchwood cemetery. Visitation will be 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. this afternoon at Roste Funeral Home in Larchwood and from 7 to 9 p.m. at St. Mary's Church with a rosary at 7 p.m. and a parish wake service at 8 p.m.
