Ruby Cason Barco, the icon of original Virginia Beach, passed away July 16,
2000. She had a passion for life and lived it to its fullest. She had
courageously survived four bouts with cancer.
Mrs. Barco, the oldest child of Sarah and Walter Cason, was born in Princess
Anne County on Nov. 23, 1917. Her grandfather, Captain Thomas Barnes, was a
forceful spirit of the Coast Guard Station at 24th Street. Mrs. Barco was a
graduate of Oceana High School and a member of Galilee Episcopal Church.
She will be missed greatly by her family and many friends. Mrs. Barco is
survived by her son, W. Cason Barco, and daughter, Jan M. Barco, both of
Virginia Beach. She was predeceased by her husband, Milton O. Barco, son Mickey
Barco, and brother Thomas W. Cason Sr.
A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Maestas Funeral Home,
Baltic Avenue Chapel, by Dr. John D. Burley. Burial will be at a later date. In
lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society,
2730 Ellsmere Ave., Norfolk, VA 23513, or to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad,
740 Virginia Beach Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA 23451.
