Phebea (Femmetje) Jans was baptized on Aug 11, 1626 in Little Waldingfield, Suffolk County, England, according to the parish register there, and died in Flatbush, Kings County, Long Island, New York on Dec 13, 1666 at the age of 40. In the Dutch tradition, her surname was her father's given name.

She came from Jarleston, England, according to her marriage record. Her first husband was Teunis Nyssen/DeNyse, whom she married on Feb 11, 1640 in the Reformed Dutch Church, New Amsterdam, New York. The marriage record shows her as a single woman. At this marriage, she was only 13 years, 9 months and 10 days old. He died in 1663. Her second husband was Jan Cornelissen Buys. She was his second wife.

When her father was convicted of theft and bound as a servant for three years to a Mr. Coxeshall, she was also bound to him for 14 years (until 1647), and she was to receive a calf at the end of the period. She was only about seven years old at the time.

On Jun 6, 1637, there is an account entitled, "Phebe Seales free from Jn. Cogshall." "John Coggesall of Boston" stated that "said girle hath proved over burthensome to him." He gave her to John Levins of Roxberry to be kept. The courts then set down an order for "disposing of the said Phebe."

Contrary to family lore, Phoebe did not marry "Hendrick the Boor." At her 1st marriage to Theunis Nyssen, she was 13 years 9 months & 10 days old. And, there was no marriage to Hendrick the Boor after Teunis because Phoebe [who married 2nd as Femmetje Jans] is listed on the marriage register as widow of Theunis Nysse 8/24/1663 per First Dutch Church of Brooklyn NY. This marriage was to Jan Cornelisen Buys, widower of Eybe Lubberts.

She was buried in the Flatbush Church cemetery according to Frost, Burials, p. 16.Daughter of John Sales and Phillip Soales.
