Cape Girardeau, Missouri
Jackson, Jan. 24--John A. McLain, prominent retired farmer, died at his home in Fruitland Sunday afternoon after a prolonged illness caused by paralytic attacks. The funeral arrangements had not been completed Monday morning, owing to the fact that one daughter is on the way here from a distance and her arrival uncertain as to time.
Mr. McLain was born in this county about 73 years ago and lived all his life within the county. He was a member of one of the oldest families in Cape Girardeau county, the McLains being among the first settlers in the territory near Oriole and other points in the northwestern part of the county.
On the 12th day of November, 1868, he was married to Missouri A. Watkins, also a member of an old family, who now survives him, together with two daughters, Mesdames Lulu Wright of Commerce and Nora Alice McNeely of Nebraska.
Several years ago Mr. McLain quit farming, in which he had been very successful, and retired to a comfortable home in Fruitland where he lived until death occurred as stated above.
