Born Jan. 8, 1836, son of Milton Hays Carr (1812-1852) and Elizabeth Prather (1815-1872); siblings: Basil P. (1847-1924;also served in Co. H, 38TH IND INF), Rachel C. (b. @1838), John Thomas (b. @1842;also served in Co. H, 38TH IND INF), and Ann E. (b. @1850); lived in Jeffersonville, Clark Co., IN in 1850

Enlisted as a SGT in Co. H, 38TH IND INF on Sept. 18, 1861; wounded at the Battle of Perryville, KY on Oct. 8, 1862; promoted to 2ND LT on March 26, 1863, 1ST LT on June 4, 1863, and CAPT on June 23, 1863; wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga, GA in Sept. 1863; medically discharged on May 23, 1864 due to his Chickamauga wounds; served as President of the 38th Indiana Veterans Association from 1898-1905

Worked as a farmer and grocer; also was a Justice of the Peace and postmaster; married Miss Louisa H. Herod (1848-1918) on Feb. 21, 1869 in Bartholomew Co., IN; children: William Everett H. (b. @1870), V.M. (b. 1872; veteran of Spanish-American War), Pink (b. @1874), Harry C. (b. @1877), Mary L. (b. @1881), Louella (b. @1890), and Millard F. (b. @1857; from 1st marriage); lived in Columbus, Bartholomew Co., IN in 1870
