Hon. J.A. Lewis, age 86 years, died here Wednesday night after a short illness. Brother Lewis, as he was familiarly known over the county, was born in Bibbs county Alabama may 17 1836, and moved to Oktibbeha County Mississippi in 1843. When he was a boy of seven years of age, he joined the Methodist church. He served as Superintendent of one Sunday School for 40 years. He joined the Masonic Lodge in 1862 and was Worshipful Master for 14 years.
Brother Lewis came to Chickasaw County in 1859 and was married to Miss Elizabeth Foster. he was a member of the Legislature for 8 years and served a number of years on the Board of Supervisors, County School Board and the Pension Board.
Brother Lewis was actively engaged in his every day affairs of life until Monday afternoon, when he was stricken suddenly with the fatal malady that carried him away so quickly. He attended church Sunday morning and was up town Monday greeting his friends and returning their greetings in his usual happy and cordial manner, but was suddenly taken ill that afternoon, and died Wednesday night.
The deceased is survived by four sons: Rev. T.W. Lewis, pastor of the Madison Heights Methodist Church, Memphis, Tn., Rev E.S. Lewis, pastor of the Methodist Church, Greenville, Miss, W.N. Lewis, lawyer, Davis Oklahoma, Dixie Lewis a prominent business man Chattanooga TN.,
The funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church by Rev. E.E. McEiethen assisted by Rev D.W. Hodges with interment at the Houston Cemetery beside his wife and son who preceded him several years.
Many beautiful flowers covered the casket, a trbute of love and esteem that was held in the hearts of many friends.
