Baptized Joseph David Mattingly, April 2, 1902, by Rev. Celestine Brey at St. Rose Catholic Church, Cloverport, Ky. Birth date, Nov. 1, 1901. Sponsor, Ella Mattingly. Parents: David Mattingly and Margaret Mattingly.

David was on the 1920 Montabur, Germany Military and Naval Forces Census as a 21 (s/b 18 - He will be 19 Nov. 1.) year old, single, Ky native, a Sergeant, in Company D, 8th Infantry Division. Home address is shown as 517 Shiller St., Tell City, IN. David was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia during the 1930 census with his wife and son. He was also at Fort Benning during the 1940 census. He was married a third time, but this wife's name is unknown.
