Milton C. Becker, age 94 of Waterbridge at Pine Grove, passed away Friday, January 23, 2009 in Waterbridge surrounded by his loving family and caring staff. Born on September 5, 1914 in Pine Grove, he was a son of the late Daniel Becker, Cora Mae Dewalt Becker Zettlemoyer and Ferdinand Zettlemoyer. He was a graduate of Pine Grove High School in 1933 and in 1934 joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. In 1942 he heard the call to serve his country and joined the the U. S. Army. During W.W.II he had been a First Sergeant, Mess sergeant and was ranked Tec4, having been with Co. D, 333rd Infantry Regiment serving at GO33 40WD 45, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaigh Medal with 3 bronze stars and the W.W. II Victory Medal. He was also a member of the 84th Infantry Division Railsplitters. Milton was the proud Founder of Boy Scout Troop 50 in Pine Grove in 1947. While involved with the Boy Scouts, he served on the staff of the Keystone Area Scout Council as Scoutmaster and was also a graduate of Boy Scout National Trainind of America. There is also a Milton C. Becker award to young scouts for their outstanding accomplishments that go above and beyond the regular requirements of a Scout. He also received the highest award for Scoutmasters, the Scoutmaster's Key and the Beaver's pendant. He served as staff on the following Camps: Nisatin, Swatara, Mt. Gretna and Hidden Valley. He was also the chairman of the Fort Lebanon District Boy Scouts of America for seven terms. Also awarded the Training Trainers certificate for Completing Instructor Training in Troop Camping. After completing his time in the service, Milton went on to Kutztown State Teacher's College and earned his Bachleor of Science in Education, graduating in 1954. He taught seventh & eighth grade Reading/English in Pine Grove Area Schools and retired in 1976 after having 39 years of service as a teacher. Milton had a love for cooking and in 1977 started his own catering business and was especially known for his potato filling. In addition to his catering service, he was the cook for the former Pine Grove Rotary Club, the Masons, the Lions Club, Lighthouse Camp and other campgrounds. He was a member and Past Commander of Pine Grove V. F. W. Post 3432, a member of the Pine Grove American Legion. Milton was a member of the Pennsylvania Dutch Singers, a licensed firstaid instructor for the American Red Cross for 50 years. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Pine Grove, served as a director on the executive council of the Pine Grove Area Council of Churches, was Past President of the Lykens Valley United Methodist Men, and in 1998 received the Certificate of Nomination of the 1998 Jefferson Award for Excellence in Public Services benefiting Local Communities. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Pamela Barr, five brothers, Charles Zettlemoyer, Harry Becker, Phaon Zettlemoyer, Donald Zettlemoyer, Glenn Zettlemoyer, three sisters, Annie Luckenbill, Irene Peiffer, Janet Lazarchick.. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Gloria Evans Becker and son, Dan Becker, Sr. and wife Charmaine of Pine Grove; daughter, Beth Ann and husband Edwin Bates of Lebanon; 3 Grandsons, Scott and wife Renee Barr, Dan, Jr. and wife Alison Becker, Justin Bates, 2 Granddaughters, Tammy Barr and friend Barry Keppley, Megan Bates, 2 Great-Grandsons, Douglas Barr, Dylan Becker, 3 GreatGranddaughters, Johanna Barr, Jessica Barr, Kylie Becker, 2 sisters, June Zimmerman of Pine Grove, Leah Koons of Friedensburg. Services will be held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at 11:00 A.M. with Dr. Ira Lydic officiating. There will be a viewing from 10:00 A.M. until time of service on Wednesday and on Tuesday, January 27 from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery Pine Grove, Pa. 17963. Contributions may be made to the to the St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 21 E.
