88, of Los Pachecos, died on January 13, 2009. She was born in Telluride, CU, to Prisciliano and Refugio Maestas, raised in Los Pachecos, and attended Alcalde Mission School and Espanola High School. She was a member of the Alcalde United Methodist Church (formerly the Alcalde Evangelical United Brethren Church) for 64 years where she was a member of the women's group, led Bible studies, taught Sunday school and Vacation Bible School, and served as Financial Secretary, Administrative Board member and delegate to numerous Annual Conferences. She participated in the Senior Choir at the Española Senior Center and served several years as vice-president of the local chapter of the AARP. At age 83, she retired after a long career as a housekeeper. The beloved matriarch of her family, she authored a series of short stories entitled "Recuerdos de Grammie" recounting her life and family experiences. She will be remembered as an intelligent, independent, hard-working and beautiful woman who took pride in her appearance, had a great sense of humor, an unwavering faith in God and a great capacity to love and relate to people of all ages, backgrounds and walks of life. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Fauster H. Honaberger, originally from Elysburg, PA, infant son Johnny, sisters Agueda Maestas, Estephana Guillen, Adela Trujillo and Lizaida Maestas, brother Amarante Maestas; sister-in-law, Augustina Abeyta Maestas; brothers-in-law, Tony Martinez, Antonio Guillen, Lucas Trujillo and close friends Elmer Dee Parham, Georgette Fauber and Isabelita Ortiz. She is survived by her children Beaulah Sandoval and husband Eugene of Española, Faustina Lucero and husband Jose of Santa Clara Pueblo, Carol Behounek of Albuquerque, David Honaberger and wife Julia, Daniel Honaberger and wife Angie, Cynthia Lujan and husband Paul all of Los Pachecos and (Felicia) Denise O'Hara and husband Jamie of Las Cruces, 21 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, her goddaughter Teresa Medina of La Villita and a special friend Elefio Montoya of Fairview. Additionally, she is survived by her younger siblings for whom she assumed the role of mother upon the early death of their mother. They include Felipe Maestas of Layton, UT, Gusman Maestas (Helen Maestas) of Clearfield, UT, and Ruth Martinez of Lompac, CA. Many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive her. Prayer service and rosary were on Thursday, January 15, at DeVargas Funeral Home.
