Demerise was the daughter of Joseph and Ursule Carrier Noel and the oldest of 6 children. She emigrated to the Walla Walla area in the late 1880s with her parents and siblings but was raised by her mother after her father returned to Quebec. She was married in 1892 to Jean Francois Berard but was widowed three years later when he drowned in the Snake river as he was ferrying supplies across. At that time, Demerise had a 2 year old son, Frank Berard, and was pregnant. Sadly she lost the second child, named Leon Berard, 4 months after he was born. In 1896, she received an offer of marriage from her first husband's business partner and cousin, Leon Francois Constantine Jaussaud, and they married. She then went on to have 9 more children - Leo, Vic, Louie, Andre, Alice Josephine, Lucille, Arthur, Felix and Louise, and they in turn gave her 10 grandchildren. She was very fond of Saint Bernard dogs, and bred them. When puppies were ready to be sold, she hooked a little wagon up to the big mama dog and they walked about town, so that interested parties could see how cute the puppies were. She was a true rancher's wife while also maintaining a lovely home in town.
