Burns Fatal to Mrs. A.J. Taysom

Death has once more invaded the peaceful home of one of Star Valley's pioneers, this time in a tragic form when major burns took the life of Mrs. Hannah Nield Taysom.
Last Saturday morning Jan. 25, Mrs. Taysom who lived alone, save for tenants occupying rooms in another part of the house, stood too near a heater and her clothing caught fire. Mrs. Mondell White immediately summoned her daughter, Mrs. Therin Merritt from next door, but before assistance could reach her, burns were inflicted which in few hours later proved fatal. By a merciful providence or by some strange alchemy of nature, the patient did not suffer pain. She was immediately removed to the hospital where opiates were administered and she lapsed into unconsciousness. Death came peacefully as the late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the valley.
Mrs. Hannah Nield Taysom was born in Lehi, Utah, February 28th, 1858. The daughter of John and Sarah Broadbent Nield, pioneers of early Utah History, she spent her early life in Utah, and taught by a thrifty capable mother, became adept in the science of cooking and homemaking and the art of sewing and various kinds of needle work. She also participated in amateur theatrical productions.
It was at Meadow, Utah, where her father taught elementary school that Mrs. Taysom met the young man who later became her husband, Abram J. Taysom, who preceded her in death some 7 years. To this union were born seven children, 3 daughters and 4 sons. Two daughters died in childhood and her youngest son, Bishop Gilbert Taysom, first Bishop of the Afton South Ward, also preceded her in death, some 14 years ago.
For some years, before coming to Star Valley, Mr. and Mrs. Taysom lived in Idaho, removing to Star Valley in May of 1887.
Mrs. Taysom has been a faithful Latter-day Saint throughout her life. And a sweet gentle patience always characterized her. For twelve years she was a teacher in the Afton Ward Primary and only last autumn was released as Relief Society District teacher after 21 years of faithful devoted service, because of failing eyesight and frail health.
She was of retiring quiet disposition, her devotion to her children and her home was beautiful to see. She taught her children correct principles; indeed the words of the Prophet Micah epitomized her entire life, "what doth the Lord require of thee, but to deal justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with thy God."
Death holds no terrors for such a woman as she, her life is finished, she died a faithful Latter-day Saint and peace and an eternal rest is hers. No mother was accorded more respect and devotion from her children than Mrs. Taysom enjoyed. Her only daughter attended her mother with a beautiful solicitude. Though Mrs. Taysom insisted upon living alone, maintaining her own establishment, she was daily attended by her sons and her daughter. Her precepts and her example will be an inspiration to them throughout life.
Surviving Mrs. Taysom are 3 sons, A.D. Taysom, Joseph Taysom, and John Taysom, and 1 daughter, Mrs. Therin Merritt of Afton, besides several brothers and a host of other relatives.
Funeral services were held in the Afton South ward chapel Tuesday, Jan 28th at 12 noon, with Bp E.N. Allred in charge. The chapel was filled with friends and relatives and a profusion of floral offerings overlaid the casket and adorned the rostrum.
Invocation was by Bp. Heman Hyde and benediction was by C.C. Leavitt. Musical numbers were a mixed quartette "The Lord's Prayer" by Margaret Anders, Nellie Roberts, Arch Gardner, and Ernest Clark, a duet "Crossing the Bar" by Lucille Call and Mondell White, and vocal solo "Sometime We'll Understand" by Harold Peterson.
The Speakers were L. C. Jensen, Pres. A.F. Burton and Bp. E.N. Allred. All the speakers paid high tribute to the splendid womanly characteristics of the deceased, her gentle patience and her unselfish devotion to duty. Al pioneers endured the hardships incident to pioneer life with an invincible courage and Mrs. Taysom, one of these indomitable faithful Saints, made the world a better place in which to live for those who came after her.
Interment was in the Afton Cemetery and the grave was dedicated by Dan Nield.
