Catherine Amelia JOHNSTON, an estimable pioneer lady, passed to the great beyond February 14, 1925. She was born in Dearborn county, Indiana, March 29, 1839, making her age 85 years, 10 months and 16 days. She emigrated to Van Buren county, Iowa, with her parents, Philamon and Sarah WILSON in 1857.
She was united in marriage to Everett JOHNSTON, now deceased, in 1855, Esquire John PENNINGTON officiating. To this union were born eight children, Louisa WOLF, Anna JOHNSTON, Mary JOHNSTON, Omer JOHNSTON, Alzora LEWIS and Alta JOHNSTON, deceased. Frank and Scott JOHNSTON survive her. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Alvira MOWRE of Montana and Mrs. Elizabeth BOWLES of Kansas, seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren and a large number of other relatives and friends who mourn her departure.
She resided at the old homestead one mile west of Bidwell over 68 years and had been a reader of the Ottumwa Courier ever sine its first publication. She joined the Methodist Episcopal church at Lebanon when twelve years of age and has been a faithful and true christian ever since. Her cheerful disposition always made her many friends.
Aunt Catherine, as she was familiarly known was a kind loving companion and affectionate mother. During the last months she frequently expressed her willingness to meet the loved ones gone before. Funeral services were held in the Christianburg church Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock February 15, conducted by Rev. Chas. L ELLIS. The remains were buried in the Chisman cemetery.
