Bertha May was the daughter of William Putnam Sheldon (1856-1939) & Hattie May Hammontree (1859-1899). She married John R Bechtel (1876-1957) 02 Oct 1901. They had 7 children together, including Jessie, Wilmer, Goldie, Ina, Olive, Walter, & Betty. She was a member of the Warsaw Methodist Church. According to her daughter Betty, she was an excellent gardener, didn't let anything go to waste, and a strong woman who overcame an illness doctors thought would be terminal.
