Hayden Auldin Robinson Sr., 81, of Hickory, N.C. passed away Saturday, Jan. 17, 2009, at Palliative Care Center and Hospice of Catawba Valley.

Born Dec. 20, 1927, in Alexander County, he was the son of the late Clyde Theodore and Hattie Robinette Robinson.

Mr. Robinson was a member of West Hickory Baptist Church. He retired from the City of Hickory, where he worked as traffic superintendent for more than 37 years. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a life member of the VFW Post 1957, a member of the American Legion Post 48, and took great pride in providing graveside military honors for many veterans throughout Catawba County. An avid sports fan, he enjoyed playing baseball, softball, volleyball, basketball and golf.

He delighted in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Hayden Robinson was a friend to all, beloved by his family and will be missed greatly.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Solon Robinson and James Robinson; and a sister, Mabel R. Crouch.

Mr. Robinson is survived by his wife of 60 years, Arcola Berry Robinson of the home; stepmother, Bessie Sipe Robinson of Hickory; two sons, Steve Robinson and wife, Kathie, of Morganton, Auldin Robinson Jr. and wife, Tina, of Granite Falls; a daughter, Ellen Bowman and husband, Chris, of Mebane; three brothers, Paul Robinson and wife, Doris, of Hickory, Dwight Robinson and wife, Betty, of South Carolina, Lewis Robinson of Hickory; sister, Martha R. Killian of Hickory; four grandsons, Daniel Robinson and wife, Stephanie, of Morganton, Justin Bowman and wife, Alison, of Apex, Matthew Bowman of Mebane, and Nicholas Bowman of Mebane; three granddaughters, Shelby Hildebrand and husband, Stephen, of Granite Falls, Jordan Robinson of Cary, Linsi Robinson of Morganton; and three great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Hayden and Brice Hildebrand of Granite Falls.

The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at West Hickory Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Scott Frady followed by military honors in the churchyard. The body will lie in state 30 minutes prior to the service.

Private interment will be in Fairview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7:30 p.m. today at Bass-Smith Funeral Home. Members of the American Legion Post 48 will serve as honorary pallbearers.
