Alva was born on the Elisha Cook farm in the Berkshires and was baptized in the Congregational Church at Louden (Otis). He joined one of the many groups that migrated westward to explore the new lands of the Western Reserve which had been ceded to Ohio by Connecticut in 1800. About 1826, with his family, he left Louden county for northern Ohio. Traveling on horseback, they reached the Western Reserve where they established a new home on a farm near Guilford (Seville), Medina, Ohio. There they became members of the Old Presbyterian Church. Lydia often spoke of Mt. Tom and Mt. Holyoke which were visible from their home in Massachusetts. Their first 5 children were born in Louden county, Mass., and the last 5 were born on the farm near Seville.
