Per contributor Lyndon Comstock: Hakerty enlisted in the 12th U.S. Colored Heavy Artillery on July 25, 1864 at Camp Nelson, Kentucky. He died of brain inflammation at a military hospital in Louisville, Kentucky while still in the service. He proceeded directly from slavery to the war against slavery. According to his military records, he was owned as a slave by Frank Moss of Clark County, Kentucky at the time of his enlistment.

Although the National Parks Services (nps.gov), who takes their records from the archives, has his last name as Hakerty, alternate spellings could be Haggerty or Haggard.
