Youngest of the three children,all sons of Frank Newton Gilbert (1848-1916) and Charlotte "Annie" (Hovenden) Gilbert (1860-1952). His brother was Alfred Carlton "A.C." Gilbert (1884-1961), inventor of the toy Erector Set. For many years, A.C. Gilbert and Frank Gilbert were in the toy factory business together in New Haven, Connecticut. His other brother was Harold Gilbert (1882-1954).
