Birth Name: Estella Lavelle Young
LaVelle Young was the only child of Oregon pioneer Cal Young of Lane County and his first wife, Elizabeth "Lizzie" (Comstock) Young of Portland. Lizzie Young died 3 days before her daughter's 8th birthday.

LaVelle Young was largely raised by her maternal grandmother, Martha Phillips Jane (Scoggin) Comstock (1838-1920) in Portland, Oregon at the home of A. D. and her aunt Ida (Comstock) Charlton.

LaVelle's father remarried when she was 17. She was 18 years older than her half-brother, Walker "Ford" Young and 20 years older than her half-sister, Brandon (Young) Southworth.

At the age of 21, LaVelle Young married Frank Wellington Gilbert on 28 Apr 1917 in Portland, Oregon.

LaVelle Gilbert's brother-in-law was A.C. Gilbert, the inventor of the toy Erector Set. Her husband and brother-in-law were in the toy manufacturing business in Connecticut. LaVelle Gilbert was the namesake of a doll they made.

Frank Wellington Gilbert and LaVelle (Young) Gilbert had a son and a daughter, Charlton (1918-2002) and VOna (Gilbert) Richards (1922-2001).

April 2007 the New Jersey School of Medicine Donor Program had no records of Lavelle Gilbert's ashes being picked up by family and no record of where her ashes were buried.
