William H. Erbe was admired by family and friends for his valiant struggle against leukemia the past 10 years.
"His most fulfilling moment this year was in walking his younger daughter, Meg, down the aisle at her wedding," said his sister, Nancy Erbe.
She said Erbe, a former football and basketball player at Highland High School, was a hospital roommate this spring of the late Jim Boggio, the former TV sportscaster who died in May.
Erbe, 58, died of leukemia Nov. 4 at Presbyterian Hospital.
A memorial service was conducted Friday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Clyde Stanfield officiating.
For the past 15 years, Erbe had been an educational sales representative for several firms that sold textbooks and equipment to schools throughout the state.
Born and raised in Albuquerque, he attended Bandelier Elementary School and Wilson Junior High School before graduating at Highland in 1957.
He married and graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1962. Erbe joined the Air Force the same year and served as intelligence officer, mostly in Taipei.
He graduated from the Thunderbird School of Foreign Trade in Phoenix in 1966 and moved to Chicago where he worked for American National Bank.
Erbe returned to New Mexico in 1981 and worked for Albuquerque Federal until he became an educational sales rep in 1983.
"He was scholarly, courageous and independent," his sister said. "He loved his family and enjoyed playing golf and tennis." He also enjoyed taking fishing trips to Eagle Nest Lake.
Survivors include his two daughters, Janine Elizabeth, the wife of Jeff Wilkins of Albuquerque, and Marguerite "Meg" Suzanne, the wife of Tom Greve of Chicago; two sisters, Mary Ann, the wife of Tom Roope, and Nancy Erbe, all of Albuquerque; two grandchildren; and Susan F. Erbe, the mother of his children.
