Alice Babbs Smith died June 29, 2009 at age 97, in Clovis, CA. She was a former resident at Friendship Manor.
Alice, one of eight children born to Minnie and Edwin Babbs, was raised on a Southern Illinois farm. She graduated from Lockyear Business College in Evansville, IN. Alice married Herbert Smith in 1934 and they raised two children, Madelyn "Maggie" and Edwin.
The family moved to California in 1960 and Alice worked for the California Parks and Recreation Department in Riverside for many years. After retirement, Alice wrote a book, Broomcorn Nostalgia-Field of Memories, featuring the Arcola, IL. annual Broomcorn festival.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Herb, sister Charlene Frazee, brothers John, James and Earl and stepsons, Herbert, Robert and Kenneth. Mrs. Smith is survived by children Maggie Stapp, Clovis, CA. Ed Smith, Marshall, VA; sisters Lydia Hemrich, Effingham, IL, Marie Ward, Newton, Il; brother Walter, Goodrich, TX. 15 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and 17 nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held at Calvary Cemetery, Santa Barbara on Friday, July 3 at 11 a.m. Arrangements were made by Clovis Funeral Chapel.
