Funeral Services of Mrs. Elizabeth Roberts Held in Evangelical Church Yesterday
Mrs. Elizabeth Roberts, who has been a resident of Watertown for the past five years, passed away early Sunday morning, June 27. Mrs. Roberts has been a patient sufferer for the past fifteen months, but the news of her death was a sudden shock to her many friends here in Watertown. Funeral services were held in the Evangelical church, yesterday afternoon at three o'clock. Rev. E. E. Headley of Clark, S. D., and Rev. Bohner, of Watertown, officiating. Interment was made in Mount Hope cemetery.
The out-of-town friends and relatives present at the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Brown and Mr. Benjamin Brown, of Inwood, Iowa; Mrs. Luke James and Mr. Frank James of Bonilla, S. D.; Mr. and Mrs. W. B. James of Vienna, S. D.; and Miss Pearl Groves, of Aberdeen, S. D.
Elizabeth Brown was born August 21, 1856 and left this life Sunday morning, June 27. She was fifty-eight years, nine months, and twenty-seven days of age. She was married January 1, 1874 to Matthew James, at Wyoming Valley, Wis., he having died thirteen years ago. She leaves three children, Mrs. H. E. Harvey and Mansel James, of this city, and W. B. James of Vienna, S. D., and one grandchild, Edna R. Harvey, of this city; also five brothers, Alexander Brown, Benjamin Brown, Joseph Brown and William D. Brown, all of Inwood, Ia., George M. Brown, of Douglass, Kan., and one sister, Mrs. Frank Lane of Ogema, Minn., to mourn her loss.
She has been a consistent Christian, having united with the Congregational church of Wyoming Valley, at the age of sixteen, and later united with the Christian church of Bradley. She was one of the early settlers, who with her husband and three small children, came to this state thirty-one years ago, and settled near Mellette, where she lived until coming to Watertown five years ago next August.
