Nora was born in Missouri on March 25, 1879, her parents were Margaret and John Hanes. She had three brothers, and two sisters. Her dad was blind in his later years, and not able to work much. Nora came to Sheridan on the train in 1901. Her family were friends of the Blanes when they all lived in Missouri. John married Nora Hanes on September 23, 1902 at Dietz.

After John and Nora married they homesteaded on Meade Creek. They raised cattle and were ranchers for many years. Their children were all born on the ranch. John had a coal mine on his place and in the winter he would mine coal and sell it to his neighbors and friends for a little extra income. Nora and John had five daughters.

The Blane girls went to school at Big Horn for a few years, staying with their grandmother. When the Whitney school was built they attended it and went to Sheridan to high school.

Nora went to a dressmaking school in Missouri and did beautiful work. She did a lot of sewing for people in Dietz, Sheridan and Big Horn in addition to sewing for her own family. Her favorite expression was “Oh, dear”.

Nora spent her last few years in California with her youngest daughter, Harriet. She passed away there on March 5, 1947, and was 68 years old.
