Henry M. Marx, age 91, of Wabasha, died Wednesday, January 7, 2009, at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Wabasha.

He was born May 21, 1917 in Wabasha, the son of Mathias and Bertha (Mars) Marx. He worked for his uncle, Nick Marx, in his coal and insurance business. He then worked as a rural mail carrier for the US Postal Service for a few years and then International Multi Foods for 12 years and finally for the Minnesota State Highway Department for 20 years. He retired in 1982. Earlier in his working years he also farmed in Wabasha. Henry married Mary Wodele October 7, 1940 at St. Felix Catholic Church in Wabasha. In their retirement years the couple spent their winters in Mesa, AZ.

He served in the US Navy during WWII on the destroyer USS Isherwood, in the South Pacific, and he sustained an injury when the ship was attacked by a Japanese kamikaze pilot thus becoming a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart. Following his time in the service he returned to Wabasha. He was a member of St. Felix Catholic Church. He was also a life member of the Wabasha American Legion Post #50 and the Burkhardt-Roemer VFW Post #4086. He was a past member of the Knights of Columbus, the St. Joseph's Society and the Catholic Order of Men Foresters. He was also a past member of the local chapter of the Izaak Walton League. Henry was also a retired member of the Wabasha Volunteer Fire Department.

He enjoyed gardening, playing cards and spending time with his family.

Henry is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Michael Marx, Alta Loma, CA, Peter and Brenda Marx, Wabasha, MN, Harold and Mary Beth Marx, Mesa, AZ, Nicholas Marx, Wabasha, MN, Matthew and LeAnne Marx, Wabasha, MN; daughters and son-in-law, Mary Lou Schneider, Salina, KS, Claire and James Abbott, Wabasha, MN; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brothers and sister-in-law, Walter and Marie Marx, Wabasha, MN, Norbert Marx, Wabasha, MN; nieces and nephews. His wife, Mary, who died July 4, 2008, one son, Charles, one sister, Irene Trinkes and two brothers, Ivan and Paul Marx, preceded him in death.

A funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at 11:00am at St. Felix Catholic Church with the Reverend Glenn Frerichs officiating. Interment will be in St. Felix Cemetery. Casket bearers will be his seven children. The Wabasha American Legion and VFW Posts will perform military rites. Friends may call at the Abbott Funeral Home on Friday from 4-8pm and at church one hour before the service.
