Mrs. Amanda Pyburn Morris, 98, died here Saturday at the home of her son, Hasson Morris. She had been in ill health for several years. Before suffering a stroke about 3 years agao, she was considered one of the best informed authorities about Winn Parish History.
She was the oldest native citizen of Winn Parish, having been born at Gansville, January 8, 1859. She was a great-granddaughter of William Mackie, the famous civil engineer who supervised the preliminary surveys of the entire Louisiana Purchase territory prior to its acquisition by the United States, and later established the original boundaries for the state of Louisiana.
Her husband, the late W.H. Morris, died 30 years ago. Since then she has made her home with her son here.
Funeral services were held here Sunday afternoon at the First Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. L.L. Booth, and the Rev. M.E. Morgan. Burial was in the Gansville Cemetery under the direction of Southern Funeral Home.
Acting as pallbearers were grandsons and great-grandsons, Bill and Jack Hagler, Eslie and Paul Wells, Dannie and Roger Hagler.
Survivors are a son, Hasson Morris, Winnfield; three daughters, Mrs. Etta Hagler, Jonesboro, Mrs. T.C. Moffett, San Antonio, Texas, and Mrs. J.C. Barnes, Jonesboro; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. Also, scores of other relatives including Dewitt Pyburn, a nephew, who is a member of the U.S. Mississippi River Commission.
