By 1851 he had been elected as Supervisor of the township of Cohoctah and then to Justice of the Peace, where he served 12 years.In 1860 he was elected to the State Legislature. He was elected Probate Judge in the fall of 1872. Hon. Jacob Kanouse took Miss Mabel Drake, daughter of Gideon and Maria (Pope) Drake, as his wife December 17, 1840. Jacob and Mabel Kanouse had four children; Luther C., Mary A., Emma J. and Nettie J.
