Alexander "Sandy" Wellford was born at Stuart Circle Hospital, Richmond, VA, on January 13, 1930. He died in Henrico County, VA just after midnight on December 31, 2008. He was the fourth child and third son of James McDonald Wellford and Frances Colquhoun Myers Wellford.
He attended the Baby Hill Nursery School, Fox Elementary School, and Albert Hill Junior High School. He graduated from St. Christopher's School in 1947, and from the University of Virginia in 1951. While at the University he was a member of the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the American Occupation. He graduated second in his class from the University of Virginia Law School in 1958, where he was a member of Phi Delta Phi, The Order of the Coif, and The Raven Society, and served as the Virginia Section Editor of the Virginia Law Review from 1956 to 1958.
Mr. Wellford practiced law with Christian & Barton in Richmond, VA for 44 years. He was a Fellow of The American College of Trial Lawyers, and a member of The American Bar Foundation, The Richmond Bar Association, and The Virginia State Bar Association. He received the 2002 George Mason Award from the Virginia Professional Chapter, Society of Professional Journalists.
He was a bird hunter and was a State Director for Ducks Unlimited. He was also an accomplished fisherman. He was an avid reader and enjoyed his cigars.
He was a member of The Westmoreland Club and The Commonwealth Club.
In 1953 Mr. Wellford married Joan Mary Welch of Rochester, NY. They had four children: Landon Carter Wellford, Ann Drury Wellford, Armistead Nelson Wellford, and James Barrett Wellford. Their marriage ended in 1986.
In 1989 he married Georgiana Gekas, to whom he was married when he died. They had no children.
