Most of Leonard's early years were spent working on farms in Quebec and Vermont. Began working his way west and worked on farms near Port Hope, Ontario and perhaps other places. Joined the Northwest Mounted Police but attempted to desert from Fort Walsh in Saskatchewan. Was caught and spent six months at hard labor. Upon his release, he went to Montana, arriving there in 1882. Found his way to the Smith River Valley where he homesteaded and spent the rest of his life there. In 1896 Phoebe Ann Blackall and her mother arrived in Townsend, Montana on the train and Leonard met them there. He and Phoebe were married there and Phoebe also spent the rest of her life on the homestead
