A vacation visit to Athens, his home town, ended tragically for J.I. (Boss) Bass, 52, of Carlsbad, New Mexico, who was killed at 12:00 Thursday night when a car in which he was riding with three other persons overturned on Highway 31 four miles East of Chandler. Bass suffered a broken neck, a badly lacerated skull and other injuries. He lived only a short time after the car turned over three times after he had lost control.
Riding in the car with Bass was his wife, who suffered a painful laceration about the lower part of her body together with bruises and cuts. She was suffering from shock at the Wolfe-Duphorne hospital Friday morning. Other occupants of the car were Mrs. Walter Bryant of Carlsbad, who suffered a slight skull fracture and many bruises and Bob Bass of Athens, brother of the deceased, who escaped with minor injuries. Mrs. Bass and Mrs. Bryant were brought to the local hospital shortly before 2:00 o'clock Friday morning.
Funeral services for the deceased were held Saturday afternoon at the First Christian Church with Rev. Bruce Banks, pastor in charge.

Mr. and Mrs. Bass had arrived in Athens Thursday for a vacation with relatives. They had gone to Tyler to visit friends there during the day and were returning to Athens when the accident occurred. The four were riding in a new car which Mr. and Mrs. Bass had purchased just before leaving Carlsbad on the vacation trip.
The dead man and injured were brought to Athens by cars which Bob Bass managed to stop on the highway after many cars had passed the scene, presumably not knowing of the tragedy. The accident occurred near the stand known as "Ruth's Place." The victim of the accident was thrown from the car.
The deceased was a son of Mrs. A.W. Bass, well known resident of near Athens. He was reared here but had been away for more than two decades, having lived in Paris, Wichita Falls and Carlsbad since leaving Athens. He was connected with a Potash mining firm at Carlsbad.

He is survived by his wife and two children, Mrs. P. Walker and Morris Bass, both of Paris, who were born of a former marriage; his mother, Mrs. A.W. Bass; one brother, Bob Bass and three sisters, Mrs. B.D. Dickerson, Mrs. H.T. Gilliam and Mrs. A.B. Cranford, all of Athens.
The death was the second in the immediate family within a month, A.B. Cranford having been buried here recently. Mrs. Cranford, who is visiting in Monette, Missouri was notified Friday morning of her brother's death.
Pallbearers names were: E. Owen, Earl Jones, Ralph Hallum Sr., W.W. Spencer, W.B. Stirman, Paul Gauntt Sr., Ira Robbins and Thomas Matthews.
