Benjamin Gill, whose middle initial appears in records as either "F" or "T", appeared in the 1850 and 1860 U.C.Censuses for Madison Twp., Lake County, Ohio, residing on the farm of his father, Charles A.Gill, born about 1811, and his mother, Eliza A. Gill, born in 1814, along with ten siblings by 1860. Although most of Company E, 7th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry was recruited in Erie County, Ohio, he enlisted on August 5, 1861, perhaps because two of his younger brothers, Thomas Seymour Gill, and Lewis C. Gill, had enlisted in Company D, which was recruited in Lake County.

Benjamin was wounded by a gunshot at the Battle of Cedar Mountain, Virginia, August 29, 1862. Transported to the General Hospital at Alexandria, Virginia, he died August 29, 1862. Rank: Private. His name is on the monument of the 7th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, located at Woodland Cemetery, 6901 Woodland Ave., Cleveland, Ohio, with the names of other regimental members who died during the war.

His mother applied for a pension based on Benjamin's military service, April 22, 1875, which was approved and issued as Certificate #18775. After she died in 1891, his father received a like pension (Certificate 451312), until his death in 1896.
