Born August 10, 1914 near Lomax in Henderson County, Illinois, she was the daughter of Roy Clayton and Ivy Mae Hubbard Sparrow. On October 3, 1934 she married Leo Palmer Orton in Denmark, Iowa. He preceded her in death on April 28, 1991.
Velna was a 1932 graduate of Dallas City (Illinois) High School. She worked at the Burlington Basket Company for 33 years, retiring in 1979.
Velna was a charter member and builder of the Flint Hills Church of the Nazarene. She enjoyed working with Guide Post Prayer Partners and was awarded the Distinguished Service Award through the Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include her daughter, Jean (Sonny) Orwig Brown of Los Angeles, California; five grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren and one sister, Ida (Dr. Dean) Hull of Clarence, Missouri.
Her husband, parents, one sister and two brothers preceded her in death.
