Shawnee resident Ernie Byrd died Saturday at his home. He was 76. Mr. Byrd was born on October 16, 1923, in Checotah to Fred Theodore and Della May Teague Byrd.

He worked as a railroad conductor for 32 years for Santa Fe Railroad and served in the U.S. Air Force for three years.

Mr. Byrd was preceded in death by his son, James Richard Byrd, parents, Fred and Della Byrd, a brother, Floyd Byrd and a sister, Jewell Wren.

Survivors include his five sons, David Gene Byrd of Oklahoma City, Richard Byrd of, Shawnee, Michael Byrd of Stillwater, Danny Byrd of Shawnee, Steven Glen Byrd of North Carolina, daughter, Jane May Spillars of Stillwater, two sisters, Lois McElfresh of Shawnee and Louise Merritt of Shawnee, special friend, Millie Gentry of Shawnee and numerous grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday in Blackburn Cemetery, under the direction of Gaskill-Owens Funeral Chapel.
