married Demarius Smith on Aug 20, 1850 in Oregon County, Missouri to which 3 children were born. She died in 1855 and James married a second time to Mary Casey on August 26, 1856 in Miller County, MO to which another 10 children were born.

James served in the Osage County Home Guards during the Civil War. In 1870 he was a merchant in Dallas County, Missouri and from 1874 - 1876 was the Dallas County Missouri Assessor. In 1885 he was a judge for the Dallas County court and in 1891 served as the Postmaster for Louisburg in Dallas County.
